Novo Nordisk looked to NNE to design the right facility to produce an innovative new haemophilia drug, so we designed and engineered a state-of-the-art, customized modular plant. Praised for its innovative design, flexibility and execution timeframe, the plant is an integrated facility for mammalian cell culture, recovery and purification. It was built as a fast-track project in just 18 months, using modular engineering – including the comprehensive parallel construction and off-site testing of independent process modules. The result is a ground-breaking facility that launched a new approach to modular engineering with customized solutions for the life sciences industry.
Praised for innovation in technology and engineering
Shortly after the facility was completed, it was nominated for ISPE’s prestigious Facility of the Year Award. This award is given to a pharmaceutical manufacturer with a facility project that demonstrates global leadership through cutting-edge engineering, innovative new technology or advanced applications of existing technology.
Out of 28 outstanding pharmaceutical facilities from five continents, Novo Nordisk’s NovoSeven® facility was chosen as the winner based on the following features:

- Meets an undefined demand for a life-saving drug by including an expandable production area in the modular design
- Characterized by simplicity and transparency to ensure a safe working environment
The plant is now helping Novo Nordisk lead the way in breakthrough medicines for the treatment of haemophilia – and it’s inspiring the construction of similar innovative facilities around the world.
