Per Vase

Managing Partner, Applied Manufacturing Science

"With design of experiments, Six Sigma and statistical process control, pharma manufacturers can achieve more consistent quality, higher yield and less waste."

Per Vase is an acknowledged data analysis expert with more than 20 years of experience.

He has a proven track record of quickly bringing products from the research phase to the quality controlled production phase using Six Sigma tools, especially tolerance stack-ups, DoE and SPC.

His main focus is on applying Six Sigma in good manufacturing practice (cGMP) environments, combining compliance and process optimisation efforts within the manufacture of medical devices to ensure both high quality and low costs.

Per Vase holds a Ph.D. in materials science from the Technical University of Denmark and an M.Sc. in experimental physics from Aarhus University. Prior to joining NNE, Per was the driving force behind a new company. He has a high level of business understanding so his solutions can meet the needs of different organisational functions.

By using these techniques, we went from a state of chaos to a data- and understanding-based control strategy within two years.

What's you view on the industry?

"Product and process understanding is key to obtaining operational excellence. By understanding your product, you can design it in a way that fulfils customer needs (improves quality) and at the same time makes it robust to variance in production (reduces cost). By understanding your process, you know which parameters to monitor during production and how to act on this monitoring. This enables you to devise a control strategy that ensures predictable and capable production. This is important to stay competitive and to comply with recent trends expected from health authorities."

Why work in this industry?

"I started working with Six Sigma and design for Six Sigma in a start-up company together with some other Ph.D students. We identified the need to make product and process understanding more operational so that it benefitted the whole organisation, especially operators. By using these techniques, we went from a state of chaos to a data and understanding-based control strategy within two years. The company was later sold with the quality system as its strongest asset. I saw the light. Since then, it has been a pleasure to assist NNE customers on the same journey towards operational excellence.”
