In 2013, Novozymes completed an optimisation of its facility in Hongda, China, which is one of the world’s largest enzyme fermentation plants. NNE was heavily involved in the industrial biotech project, delivering design and EPCMV.
In addition to improving the production, the project included implementation of several new functions, such as dispatch area, cold warehouse and service rooms. The Hongda site, which produces enzymes for various industries, is a strategically important part of Novozymes’ global supply chain. “We want to be close to our customers, and Hongda is an ideal location for that,” says Rasmus Steen Mortensen, Sr. Director, Supply Chain EMEA and APAC at Novozymes.
A 30-strong team
Novozymes always sets the bar high when it comes to quality, and the project was characterised by stringent requirements. In addition, we were given just eight months to complete the construction, installation and commissioning.
Around 30 people from NNE worked closely with the customer’s project team to complete the project under the tight schedule and at the required quality. And the team effort was successful: "By integrating good engineering practice, transferring knowledge from Novozymes’ TEDA plant and fulfilling their requirements, the project met the targets for quality, cost, time and safety – without interrupting on-going production," says NNE project manager Xiao Fei Chong, and adds, “We are very satisfied with the result as well as with the cooperation between NNE and Novozymes. And so are they.”
We handed over the basic design in April 2012, and started the detailed design in May. In September 2012, we were granted construction permission and just under a year later – in June 2013 – we celebrated the successful completion of the expansion together with Novozymes.
