When the chance of an internship at NNE presented itself, Sean Petersen was quick to grab it. Read what he takes away from his time at NNE.
Why did you take your internship at NNE?
NNE has been a part of my life ever since I could remember. My father has been working here for 15+ years and me being able to join for nine weeks and learn about the company and industry has been amazing to say the least.
I joined in June 2018 right after my high school as a strategy intern after applying for the position a few weeks before. I had decided to apply as I felt it was a great opportunity to learn more about the corporate world and gain key experience that I would be able to use and apply as I go on to apply for jobs after college. I also felt that NNE was one of the best places I could be to learn and develop my skills.
What did you enjoy most during your time at NNE?
Learning is what makes work interesting for me. I left the Durham Office everyday feeling as if I had so much more knowledge than when I walked in. It already feels like I am much readier for a life after college than most of my friends my age are.
Every time I learn something new, I realize how much I still don’t know which makes me eager to learn and find the answers to my questions. The NNE work environment has been great and people were incredibly pleasant to work with and always willing to help.
The most challenging part about my role is also the most enjoyable thing, there’s always something to work on or be done. I love having something to do and this job never gets boring. It takes organization, time management and social skills to work in a strategy position as you constantly have things on your plate, need to be able to set up meetings and interact with plenty of people.
My favorite moment at NNE was going to our weekly board meetings. Being able to see each department grow and track their progress weekly was exciting to see as well as getting to interact and problem-solve at the meetings made it even better.
What does the future hold for you?
After college, I can see myself seeking a role in finance or business management in a big city. I look forward to a lifestyle packed with work, but also time to go enjoy myself and travel.
